Ways to Find a Graduation Dress

Anyone who's worked through tough classes for years knows how important graduation day is. While you take pictures with loved ones and stand proudly with your classmates, your graduation dress can be just as important. You may be wondering how to find the perfect dress for such a memorable day, but don't know where to start. By knowing graduation dress basics, complementing your body and keeping the occasion in mind, you can shine as you shake hands with teachers and professors.

Party 1: Figuring Out the Basics

1. Look at dress codes.
Some schools may prohibit strapless or spaghetti strapped dresses. If this is the case, don't look for graduation dresses that would violate the dress code. Check with a teacher, professor or prior graduate, if you're unsure of where to find a handbook.

2. Pick the right fabric for the season.
  • If you graduate in the spring, you may not want to wear a wool, sweater dress. Besides that, you may get toasty in the graduation auditorium with loads of people. Cotton, silk and rayon are all light weight fabrics good for spring. If you happen to be graduating in the fall, choose thick cotton or cotton blends, which will still breathe under your robe.
  • Linen is a great fabric for extra hot humid months, because of its superior breathability.
  • Wool is great in cold weather, because it will insulate yet breathe.

3. Decide on a budget.
You will find a huge variety of places to shop for dresses. This includes everywhere from discount chain stores to specialty boutiques that sell wedding dresses too. You can find the right dress no matter where you shop, but keeping your budget in mind can help narrow down the playing field. Remember that different department stores have different prices.
  • Look at discount stores, like Forever 21 or some online shops, such as eDressit, tbdress, if your budget falls below one-hundred dollars.
  • You can look in department stores, if you have a budget of up to three-hundred dollars.
  • Boutique dress shops are for when money is no object.
4. Choose the right length.
Most dresses are going to look best right above or below the knee on graduation day. If you happen to have a formal dinner or celebration after the ceremony, you may look at longer dresses, but make sure they are not too long. You wouldn’t want to trip on your way to the stage.

 5. Compliment the color of your cap and gown.
Keep your graduation colors in mind as you shop for dresses. Just because most of it will be covered, doesn't mean hemlines or necklines can't peek out. Choose a color that will match your school colors, so it will look nice in pictures and with or without the robe on. Do not wear a hot pink dress with an orange cap.

6. Match your dress to your shoes.
In all actuality, it will be your shoes that will be seen the most on your walk to stage. Pick your shoes out first and match your dress to them. Make sure you can walk comfortably and match not only the color of your dress, but the style to them. Wedges may match with a light-colored, flirty dress, while black, leather pumps may be better with a sheath dress.

Party 2: Shopping for the Perfect Dress

1. Start the hunt early.
Don't stress yourself out by shopping for a graduation dress at the last minute. Start looking as soon as you can, preferably a few months ahead of time. You'll be able to weigh your options, stay on budget, and find one that perfectly flatters you.

2. Take along a trusted friend or relative for opinions.
Sometimes it's hard to decide on important things like a graduation dress on your own. A close friend or relative can tell you what looks good and what doesn't. Use your own judgement first, but they can point things out about fit and colors you may not normally notice.
Take along fellow graduates, if you can. This will prevent you from choosing the same dress.

3. Consider online options.
Online dress shops often have a wide selection. Use filters to narrow down your choices. Filter by choices like style, cut, print, length, or occasion. Some online shops even have selections specifically for graduation day. Review the return policy before you buy in case you don't like a dress, after you try it on.

4. Find the right print and color.
The time of year you graduate is going to play an important part in choosing a print and color. Light-colored floral dresses are appropriate in the spring, while dark gingham is more appropriate in the fall. This is just a guideline though! Let your personal style show through above all else.

5. Remember you'll be in front of family and teachers.
Flatter your figure to your heart's delight, but remember too much body hugging fabric may be inappropriate on graduation day. Skip the clubwear and opt for a semi-formal or casual dress that is cute, yet leaves room for the imagination.

6. Remember the after party.
Graduation day rarely includes just a graduation ceremony. You will probably at least go to dinner with close friends and family. Wear a summer dress for an outdoor graduation party, or a dress you can take out on the town to dance the night away.

Party 3: Choosing the Best Style

1. Flatter your figure.
The style of dress you decide on is going to have a lot to do with what looks good on your body type. You can minimize areas you're self conscious about, or emphasize parts of your body you're proud of. Show off your hourglass figure with a belted or cinched waist. Choose an empire waist, if you want your dress to flow loosely around a mid-section.
  • Play up curves with ruched fabric around the bust and hips.
  • Down-play your bottom half with a dress fitted from the waist up and flared out below it.
  • Offset broad shoulders by wearing an A-line dress that flares out slightly at the waist.
2. Choose a neckline.
Necklines of dresses come in as much variety as the cut. If you have special jewelry for graduation day, like your grandmother's pearl necklace, you definitely need to decide on a neckline. You may want a scalloped or v-neck to show it off. Choose no neckline at all with a strapless dress and wear a statement necklace.
  • Go conservative with a high neckline.
  • A little cleavage is fine, but don't go overboard

3. Show off your personality.
The best way to feel good in what you're wearing is by showing off your style and personality. Be feminine with ruffles and bows. Be chic in something simple and dark. Be glamorous with touches of sparkle or sequins. Wearing a dress that helps express your individual style will keep you glowing on graduation day.

4. Alter your dress.
Sometimes you may find the perfect dress, but need the waist or bust taken in. The fit of a dress is important. Make sure you go to a well reviewed seamstress for measurements and alterations. They can put the final touches on a dress to help you feel your best.

What to Wear for Summer Graduation?

Graduation is a special time to reflect upon your academic accomplishments, but you don't need a degree in fashion to celebrate your graduation in style. A graduation ceremony is a formal event. You’ve been working towards this day for a few years after all. You also want your attire to match the merry mood and reflect your individuality in a sea of graduates. Choosing appropriate apparel can be a challenge. The right graduation attire will have you looking and feeling sharp while you celebrate your special day of scholarly success.

Look Smart, Feel Smart

You may be wondering why your attire is so important when you'll be covered from head to toe in a cap and gown. You could probably get away with wearing a velour sweatsuit or nothing at all under that gown (don't do it). Clothes have a huge impact on your attitude and say something about who you are as a person. On a big day like graduation day, you want to feel accomplished and confident. Look sharp and feel smart in dress slacks, a button down shirt, dress shoes and a graduation tie. This is a classic combination that you'll see at a graduation. You'll want your slacks, socks and shoes to all go together. This is one part of your outfit that will be on full display. Clashing color combinations can be distracting. Don't let your mismatched shoes and slacks ruin your big moment. Celebrate your unique style with properly paired color combinations and a dapper tie to pull the look together.

Make sure to keep the graduation location in mind as you choose your clothing material. If the ceremony is going to be outside on a warm day, you’ll want to wear lighter materials so you won’t be sweltering and uncomfortable. If you know the auditorium tends to be chilly, make sure to wear long sleeves or a blazer.

Show Some School Spirit
You've probably put a lot of blood, sweat and beers into reaching this pivotal point in your life. Give a nod to your soon-to-be alma mater by sporting your school colors. If your school colors include extremely bright hues such as orange, you don’t have to wear an obnoxiously orange shirt. Tone it done with a softer hue that still fits the color palette and let your tie do the talking.

What Not to Wear on Graduation Party

Deciding what to wear for graduation requires more than merely picking up your cap and gown and making sure you put on the tassel correctly. You have to choose something to wear under the academic garb, too, and while it may not seem important, you don't want to wear something that's so uncomfortable you can't enjoy yourself.

What you end up wearing will ultimately depend on your personal taste and the style of the time, but no matter the trend, here are a few things you probably don't want to be wearing once "Pomp and Circumstance" starts playing.

Uncomfortable Shoes
True, treating yourself to a new (and cute!) pair of shoes might be the special splurge you feel you deserve after your years of hard work in school. But you'll likely be on your feet most, if not all, of the day.

If you want a pair of shoes to help you stand out, go for bright colors that your friends and family can see beneath your graduation gown. Comfort, however, should definitely take priority; you don't want to be hobbling around with blistered feet on a day when you feel like jumping for joy.

Shoes You've Never Worn Before

If you are going to buy some new shoes for graduation, make sure you wear them before graduation day. Even if they feel comfortable at first, wear them around your room or apartment for a bit. That way, you can stretch them out and make sure they really are comfortable.

Clothes That Are Inappropriate for the Weather

If you're going to be graduating outside in 100-degree weather, dress appropriately. You don't want to faint from heat exhaustion or wear something that will show sweat (you'll probably take pictures without the academic dress, too). Be smart about what the weather is and how you need to dress.

Clothes That Are Too Formal or Not Formal Enough

Wearing jeans to your college graduation probably isn't a smart choice, but a ball gown isn't quite right, either. Aim for business or business casual for the ceremony. That means a nice dress, nice pants, nice shirt/blouse, and nice shoes. You can consider some online store graduation dresses.

Day time is for school and past, the night time is for yourself and future. So, you can wear something different at night graduation parties. Just as the following shows.

long sleeves prom dresses
Clothes That Won't Look Good in Pictures

If you aren't sure what style to pick, going for a classic and classy look is always wise. You don't, after all, want to look back at your graduation photo and wince at your wardrobe choice. Pick something that looks nice, looks professional and will represent you well over the years.

Anything That Is Inappropriate or Might Get You in Trouble

You're still a college student, after all, which means that any poor decisions you make about what to wear can lead to some serious consequences. Wearing clothing with an offensive slogan or putting an offensive or inappropriate message on your graduation cap might seem amusing to you — but not to the administration. After everything you've done to earn your degree, don't sabotage your chance to celebrate it.

Classic Graduation Dresses, Guides and Tips

Graduation ceremony is the last performance at school. It is your big day to step in social and say goodbye to more than 10 years school life. Congratulations! Just select and wear a nice graduation dress and then enjoy your day.

We know that, there will be so many special occasions in our life. Graduation ceremony is no doubt one event that we should treat seriously, as it marks the start of a new chapter while celebrating the achievements that led to that point. Not only will you be in front of hundreds of classmates, family, friends, and faculty, but you will be snapped in countless pictures that will be looked back on for years to come.  That being said, it is extremely important to look your best so that you make a good impression and don't have any regrets in the future.  Check out some of our tips of what to wear on your graduation day below!

Dress of course.
To make your graduation party perfect and no regrets, graduation dress is a basic equipment.  Don't reach for the trendiest, tightest dress in your closet. Instead, opt for a cute and conservative style that will look appropriate in front of friends and family alike. Since graduation is in the spring, I would recommend choosing a sleeveless style—especially since those robes can get a little toasty. This little number from eDressit 2018 new collection is an adorable option.
Wear comfortable shoes.
Being comfortable on your graduation day is an absolute must; you will be spending most of it standing, walking, and posing.  The last thing you need is a pair of shoes that don’t fit properly or are too high.  While dressy sandals and ballet flats are a reliable option, why not turn it up a notch with a comfortable wedge.  Adding a little lift to your look with help dress up your graduation gown and give you better posture in pictures.  Your shoes are the only things not being covered up, so make them worth the attention!  If you are ever stumped on what shoe to wear, just remember to stick to the three C’s: classy, cute, and comfortable。
Stick to statement jewelry.
I wouldn't say that your jewelry has to be simple to the extreme, but you also don’t want to overdo it. Stick to one staple bauble—whether that means rocking a statement necklace or having an arm party. Then keep the rest of your jewelry simple—a ladylike ring, pearl earrings. Try to avoid anything that jingles around as you will probably be shaking hands, waving, and giving hugs all day. This lovely pink statement necklace from Bauble Bar would be perfect with a high-neckline dress.

Create a natural, fresh beauty look.
You want your makeup give you a natural glow so that you will look radiant. If you pile it on and you’re spending the entire day outdoors, you will probably feel like you are melting. Keep it light with these sweat-proof beauty tips, and choose a feminine lip color. Apply a few coats of mascara, and be sure to use a moisturizer that has SPF in it (no one wants a post-grad sunburn!). The photo below is perfect graduation makeup, in my opinion.

I hope these tips have helped to prepare you for graduation day! As long as you dress to flatter your figure and channel your true personal style, I'm sure you will look greater even than them. All these looks and dresses can be found in eDressit style gallery.
